In 1893, the Ilkley Local Board bought Ilkley Moor from Marmaduke Francis Middleton for the then enormous sum of £13,500. The reason for the purchase was that there was seen to be a conflict between the shooting interests (represented by Middleton) and the rights of the public to enjoy the Moor. That decision resonates today.

Shooting on the Moor: 21/5/2012
The Friends of Ilkley Moor have strengthened their opposition to the lease for shooting on Ilkley Moor by writing to the Leaders of all the Groups on Bradford Council (Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Green, Respect, Independents and Queensbury Ward Independents) asking for the lease to be terminated in May 2013. This is the earliest date at which the Council can terminate the lease without any cost to itself. FoIM has offered to meet with any or all of the Leaders to discuss the matter.
